For such a small city, I was surprised by how many great coffee shops and cafes I found in Porto. It didn't take long to realize that Porto takes its coffee almost as seriously as its Port.

After three visits, these are my absolute favorite cafes in Porto for both food and coffee. I've included spots throughout the city center near top sights and neighborhoods, so no matter where you find yourself, you'll never be far from a quality coffee.

Some of my picks are true coffee shops, while others are more traditional cafes with a menu filled with brunch staples like pancakes, eggs Benedict, waffles, and açaí bowls.

Whether you're craving a simple coffee with space to work or a full-on brunch with fluffy pancakes and flat whites, I've got a spot for you!

1. C'alma Coffee Room

One of the best Porto coffee shops for European vibes and nitro cold brew

C'alma Coffee Room is one of my favorite coffee shops in Porto. The vibe is relaxed, cozy, and very European.

Take your pick from a variety of brewing methods, including V60, Chemex, Kalita, and Aeropress. Nitro cold brew is also available — a rarity in Portugal!

This is also a great spot to work or study, with reliable WiFi and laptop-friendly tables.

The location is ideal for tourists, too, as it's just minutes from Rua Santa Catarina, one of Porto's most popular shopping streets.

If you're looking for a chill Porto coffee shop with quality coffee and a laptop-friendly atmosphere, C'alma Coffee Room won't disappoint!

2. Combi Coffee Roasters

One of the best Porto coffee shops for a spacious layout and top-quality brews

Combi Coffee Roasters serves some of the best coffee Porto has to offer, with beans roasted in-house for optimal freshness. The quality really is superb.

If you're a purist who appreciates a good black coffee — Americano, French press, V60, or espresso — Combi is the place to go. That said, their flat white is consistently top-notch.

This Porto coffee shop stands out not only for its coffee but also for its welcoming atmosphere. The space has that classic third-wave coffee shop feel, with an open layout and a design that's minimal yet homey.

WiFi is available, and laptops are welcome on weekdays, but they're not allowed on weekends or holidays.

You'll also find a small selection of cafe bites, including acai and yogurt bowls, smoothies, and toasts. The pastry selection may be small, but everything looked incredible! I've tried the Swedish cardamom knot and traditional pastel de nata, and both were delicious.

3. SO Coffee Roasters

ONE OF THE BEST PORTO COFFEE SHOPS FOR THE PERFECT FLAT WHITE

This Porto coffee shop has the BEST flat whites! If you're a coffee snob looking for a flat white comparable to what you'd find in Melbourne, this is your spot.

SO Coffee Roasters has two locations in Porto (and a recent addition in Lisbon). The cafe on Rua de Sá de Noronha is centrally located and has plenty of seating. You'll find the main coffee bar and several tables and chairs on the ground floor, which is laptop-free. Upstairs, there's a communal table where laptops are welcome.

This location also has the largest food menu, though it's still relatively limited. You'll find a thoughtful selection of pastries, sandwiches, cakes, and smoothies.

The newest location, Rua da Restauração, opened in 2023. It's spacious and has a modern, industrial feel, with the coffee roaster in the back. Since it's on the outskirts of the city center, it's also less crowded than some of the other coffee shops on this list. This is my favorite of the two for the overall vibe.

Beyond its cafes, SO is well known on the international coffee stage. Members of their team have won several awards and titles, including Portugal's National Barista Championship and Brewers Cup, so it's safe to say they take their coffee seriously.

4. Do Norte Cafe by Hungry Biker and Floresta Cafe by Hungry Biker

Two of the best cafes in Porto FOR healthy dishes and a cozy vibe

If you're looking to pair your morning latte with a hearty breakfast/brunch in a cozy atmosphere, Do Norte Cafe will fit the bill.

There are two cafes: Do Norte Cafe and Floresta Cafe. Each evokes forest/cozy cabin vibes.

These are some of the best cafes in Porto if you're looking for healthy options and large portions. The "Brunch Do Norte" includes avocado, smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, a small salad, toast with jam, yogurt with fruit and honey, and a coffee or tea of your choice.

Other menu items include smoothies, porridge, salads and hummus bowls, beetroot lattes, iced coffee drinks, and savory waffles.

While the coffee is good, I wouldn't call it third-wave coffee, so this is more of a spot when both food and coffee are equally important.

5. 7g Roaster

One of the Best coffee shops located in Vila Nova de Gaia (across the river)

7g Roaster is technically in Vila Nova de Gaia, the neighborhood just across the river from Porto. But honestly, most visitors think of this area as Porto anyway.

Vila Nova de Gaia is where you'll find the famous Port lodges and a beautiful boardwalk along the river, so you'll most likely find yourself here at some point during your visit. Plus, it has some of the best views of Porto.

7g Roaster easily makes my list of the best cafes in Porto. The food, coffee, atmosphere, location, and amount of space tick all the boxes.

The menu is extensive and leans more toward an all-day brunch menu. You'll find everything from smoothie bowls, pancakes, and chilaquiles to several variations of eggs Benedict and burgers.

For coffee, choose from a variety of brewing methods, including V60, Chemex, and Aeropress. They also offer chai, cold brew, and a variety of iced drinks.

7g Roaster is by far the largest of the Porto coffee shops and cafes on this list, so it's a great option if you want somewhere with plenty of space to sit and relax.

Honorable Mention: Majestic Cafe

One of the best cafes in Porto for old-world elegance

I can't write a blog post about the best cafes in Porto, Portugal, and not include Majestic Cafe. It has, after all, made the list of the Most Beautiful Cafes in Europe.

But I have mixed thoughts.

Is it pretty? Yes. Have I been to better? Also yes.

The food and coffee are just OK, and the prices are high. If you haven't experienced other classic European cafes with that old-world elegance, though, it's worth stopping by for the atmosphere.

Honorable Mention: Garden Porto Cafe

One of the best cafes in Porto for brunch favorites and low prices

Similar to Do Norte Cafe by Hungry Biker and Floresta Cafe, Garden Porto Cafe is known for its all-day brunch menu and surprisingly low prices.

Popular items include several versions of eggs Benedict, avocado toast, and pancakes/waffles—all costing between €8 and €10. I highly recommend the Royal Garden Eggs with smoked salmon, avocado, tomato, and hollandaise. Coffee prices are low as well, with a flat white costing a mere €2.50. Cocktails, beer, wine, and pressed juices are also available.

The atmosphere has a cozy, boho vibe. Try to snag a seat by the window overlooking the pretty tree-lined street, or grab a spot on the sidewalk patio when the weather is nice.

Free WiFi is available, and there's plenty of space, although it can get busy on weekends. The long hours — 9:00 am to 7:30 pm daily — make this a convenient stop whether you're looking for breakfast, lunch, or an afternoon coffee.

Honorable Mention: My Coffee Porto

One of the best cafes in Porto for coffee with a view

You're in for a treat if you can snag one of the four outdoor tables at My Coffee Porto on Escadas do Codeçal 22. The views are incredible, thanks to its location right above the Douro River and next to the Dom Luís I Bridge.

A full coffee menu is available alongside typical cafe fare, including acai bowls, sandwiches, toasts, and yogurt bowls. The price point was a pleasant surprise given the view, with €3.00 flat whites, €2.50 Americanos, and €7 acai bowls.

I recommend going right when they open at 9:00 a.m. on a weekday for the best chance of snagging a table.
