TOP 5 Barcelona Bakeries | Best Croissants, Pastries, Sourdough & More!
Discover the TOP 5 Barcelona bakeries! Mascarpone-filled croissants, vegan sandwiches, baked from scratch bread, and pastries almost too beautiful to eat, these spots are worth every calorie.
After searching for the best ice cream in Barcelona, I decided next up should be the best bakeries in Barcelona! If you can't tell, I have an undeniable sweet tooth.
Barcelona has a soft spot in my heart. So much so I've collectively spent about 3 weeks here along with three birthdays. I've had plenty of time to wander the streets and search for the highest quality Barcelona bakeries. Tough work, I know.
After countless croissants, one-of-a-kind pastries, mini cookies, and fresh-baked bread...and daily morning jogs to counteract said items...I've decided upon the TOP 5 Barcelona bakeries.
Some are old, some are new. Some focus on bread while others focus on elaborate pastries. One thing they all have in common is a passion for baked goods and outstanding quality. I find myself returning to these bakeries again and again. I'm sure you might just make a return visit to a few as well.
1. Hofmann Patisserie
One of the best Barcelona bakeries for artistic pastries and award-winning croissants
Hofmann Patisserie is a household name among locals, and the shop has a constant stream of customers picking up croissants and gorgeous pastry creations. Many say Hofmann makes some of the best croissants in Barcelona, if not all of Spain.
In fact, Hofmann Patisserie won Best Croissant in Spain in 2010 and was also awarded Best Tea Biscuit in Spain in 2016.
This is the type of place where you walk in and say, “I’ll just get one croissant,” and then leave with five items because everything looks too good to pass up.
You can’t visit Hofmann Patisserie without trying their famous mascarpone-filled croissant. It's worth the hype.
And just look at those elaborate pastries! Choose from creations like La Rosa, a combination of rose tea, lychee, chocolate, and vanilla topped with delicate chocolate rose petals. Or go for The Pistachio, which looks like an egg-sized pistachio. The Volcanic appears to be a piece of volcanic rock, but inside is an explosion of chocolate.
Go early if you want a specific croissant flavor, especially the mascarpone, as the most popular flavors can sell out.
Other croissant flavors include Sacher, praline, Catalan cream, mango, white apple, cheesecake, and chocolate brioche.
Hofmann Patisserie’s location in the heart of the El Born neighborhood makes it a convenient stop while sightseeing. Grab your pastries and walk about 5 minutes to Ciutadella Park, or take a seat on one of the benches along Passeig del Born, a charming tree-lined street just across from Hofmann Patisserie.
2. Origo Bakery
One Of The Best Bakeries In Barcelona For Sourdough Bread And Creative Seasonal Pastries
Origo Bakery specializes in organic sourdough, handmade pastries, and specialty coffee, with a real focus on quality ingredients and traditional techniques. Their bread is slow-fermented using organic, stone-milled flour.
Their pastries are just as impressive as their sourdough, most notably the cardamom twist and cinnamon twist. The butter croissant and pain au chocolat are excellent too. A fan favorite is the Mico — a Monkey Bread and Kouign-amann hybrid made from croissant dough with browned butter, coffee syrup, and lemon zest. My personal favorite, though, is the ham and cheese croissant.
Origo also offers more creative pastries that change with the season, like a plum tartlet with white chocolate, pistachio, and mascarpone cream, or a spiced pear and vanilla cream puff pastry.
I especially appreciate that Origo takes its coffee seriously, too. They serve specialty, third-wave coffee, with local roasters often featured. Nothing is better than a perfectly prepared flat white and a scrumptious pastry!
Origo started in Gràcia and now has three locations around Barcelona, including Sant Antoni and Passeig de Sant Joan, so there's a good chance you'll be near one at some point during your sightseeing.
3. Forn Mistral
One of the best Barcelona bakeries for Ensaimadas
Forn Mistral dates back to 1879 and has been owned and operated by the same family for five generations. With a focus on quality ingredients and traditional baking techniques, it’s no surprise that Forn Mistral has won multiple awards and is considered one of the top bakeries in Barcelona.
The mini chocolate croissants are extremely popular and perfect for munching on as you walk to your next destination.
Be sure to try an ensaimada, a sweet, spiral-shaped pastry that originated in Mallorca, Spain. It’s traditionally dusted with powdered sugar, but you’ll also find versions filled with pumpkin jam, pastry cream, chocolate, or apricot.
Forn Mistral has several locations around Barcelona. The Carrer de Torres location in El Raval is an actual café where you can sit and pair your pastry with a coffee or hot chocolate. And this isn’t your typical American hot chocolate — Spanish drinking chocolate is thick, rich, and almost pudding-like.
The Sant Antoni location is to-go only, while there's also a third location farther north in the Gracia neighborhood.

4. Funky Bakers
The best Barcelona bakery for BASQUE CHEESECAKE, sandwiches, and coffee
Funky Bakers is unlike most of the bakeries you’ll find in Barcelona. Their pastries and breads combine Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Nordic, and Australian influences. If you're looking to change it up, this is a great option.
Everything is made from scratch using seasonal ingredients.
Funky Bakers is particularly known for their Basque cheesecake — and I can confirm that it tastes just like the cheesecake I had in San Sebastián, where Basque cheesecake originated. The pistachio croissant is one of their most popular pastries and my personal favorite.
This is also a great stop for sandwiches, making it a little different from the other bakeries on this list.
The original Funky Bakery is on Passeig del Born and is to-go only. It makes for a convenient stop while exploring the El Born neighborhood.
Funky has since expanded with two new locations in Eixample, right next to each other: the Funky Deli and the Funky Eatery. The Deli is more of a gourmet shop with to-go items, while the Eatery has a sit-down menu blending Mediterranean and Turkish flavors. The Eatery is where you'll want to head if you're looking for an actual meal.
5. La Colmena
The best Barcelona bakery for xuxu pastries and mini cookies
Located in Place de L’Angel square, La Colmena is a convenient place to stop on your way to the Cathedral of Barcelona as it’s just steps away.
My favorite things to get here are the little cookies. Perfect for those that have a hard time making decisions. These mini cookies are small enough that you can buy several flavors and not feel guilty. Try the mocha and the ones dipped in chocolate with raspberry jam in the middle.
Grab one of the adorable metal boxes and fill it with cookies and chocolates to bring home as a gift…or eat on the plane ride home.
One of La Colmena’s specialties is the xuxu. A pastry filled with crema Catalana, deep-fried, and rolled in sugar. Absolutely worth every single calorie.
Honorable Mention - Primate Bakehouse
Primate Bakehouse - Manso is a small artisan bakery in the Sant Antoni area. They make their sourdough breads and laminated pastries with a 48-hour fermentation process, using just flour, filtered water, and sea salt, without additives or preservatives.
The standout item that makes Primate Bakehouse worthy of a slight detour is The medialuna — an Argentine-style pastry that's buttery, fluffy, slightly sweet, and easily addictive/worthy of ordering more than one.
They also make croissants, cinnamon rolls, banana bread, and other seasonal pastries, plus specialty coffee.
The bakery itself is modern and minimalist, but it’s more of a grab-and-go spot since seating is very limited. Pick up a coffee and pastry to-go and keep exploring Sant Antoni.
Honorable Mention - Baluard
Baluard is a great option if you’re in the Barceloneta neighborhood, heading to the beach, or exploring around Port Vell. It’s the perfect spot to grab pastries, sandwiches, and coffee to-go for a DIY picnic or beach snack. The almond croissant and chocolate croissant are popular picks, while the baguettes and breads are what Baluard is really known for.
In SUmmary
I hope this list of the best Barcelona bakeries steers you in the right direction when you’re looking for that perfect croissant, elaborate pastry, veggie sandwich, or a fresh loaf of sourdough.
What I love about these bakeries is that they’re all a little different. Some are known for award-winning croissants, others for creative seasonal pastries, traditional Spanish baked goods, or seriously good coffee and sandwiches. Whether you’re looking for a quick pastry to enjoy while exploring the city or want to sit down for a leisurely breakfast, there’s something on this list for you.
These are the spots I find myself revisiting each time I’m in Barcelona, and I hope you discover a new favorite of your own.
