How Many Days in Madrid Do You Really Need?

how many days in madrid

Trying to decide how many days in Madrid will make for the perfect trip? I'll take you through how much time you need to see the top sights plus give recommendations if you're on a tight schedule or like to travel slow.

Madrid is drastically different than other cities in Spain. It is, after all, Spain's business and financial hub (and much of Europe for that matter).

A big plus is that it's one of the easiest cities in Europe to fly into with many non-stop flights from major US airports. This makes it a simple stop into or out of Europe and is why many travelers add it to their itinerary.

I have mixed feelings about Madrid. It's changed considerably over the last few years.

The city seems to be focused on business travelers (which was predicted during Brexit and Madrid's subsequent rise as a European financial hub). With that comes increased prices, a quicker-paced city, and a loss of charm/culture.

Now, don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe Spain's capital is worth a visit. I wouldn't have returned to Madrid 5+ times if I didn't think it was a cool city.

I just believe Madrid is best done on a short visit for the average tourist. I recommend this so you can spend time in more memorable places that ooze quintessential Spanish charm, character, and soul.

Enough of the intro, let's dive into how many days in Madrid are recommended for your upcoming trip. I'll take you through precisely how much time I recommend for different types of travelers and scenarios.

Short and sweet: how many days are ideal for the average tourist?

2 nights and 2 full days will allow just enough time to see the top sights, wander a few neighborhoods, join one or two tours, relax at Retiro Park, and enjoy a few leisurely meals.

While 2 days may seem rushed, it's actually not. Madrid's historic core is small and mostly walkable. The metro is easy to use if you're looking to explore neighborhoods further from the city center or aren't up for a 20-minute walk.

Excluding the Royal Palace of Madrid and Prado Museum, most sights require little time. Many are a walk-by/quick wander.

Read my 2 Days in Madrid itinerary for a detailed look at how to plan your time with a corresponding Google Maps and PDF itinerary.

If you're looking to tick off the top sights and get an intro to the city, 2 days will be plenty. Once you reach more atmospheric places in Spain (Seville, Mallorca, Granada, etc.), you'll be glad you didn't linger.

How many days in Madrid for a first trip to Spain | 2 days

As stated above, 2 days is the sweet spot. This holds true if it's your first time in Spain. There are many places in Spain you'll want to see, so I advise carving just enough time to see the sights and move on.

I do not recommend lingering in Madrid because there are better places in Spain to do that.

2 nights and 2 full days in Madrid means you can see everything worth seeing and not feel rushed. You'll have time for leisurely coffee breaks, tapas crawls, and lengthy dinners. You can spend some extra time at both the Palace of Madrid and Prado Museum and skip the breakneck pace.

If you're a speedy traveler, you could even do a half-day trip to Toledo.

How many days do you need in Madrid to see the highlights | 1 day

If you're on a tight schedule and itching to reach other places in Spain, you could actually get away with 1 day in Madrid. It will be a very full, very long day, but you'll be able to see the highlights.

It's quite easy to see the top sights in one day because the "tourist zone" is walkable and compact.

Those not up to walking everywhere will find cabs readily available and cheap. Uber, Cabify, and Bolt operate in Madrid and can be booked via the corresponding phone app.

The metro is also easy.

The walkability, easy metro, and cheap cabs mean you can fit A LOT into one day.

This is what I would include in a 1-day itinerary:

  • Plaza Mayor
  • Mercado San Miguel
  • Royal Palace of Madrid (1.5 hours)
  • churros and chocolate at Chocolateria San Gines
  • Royal Basilica of Saint Francis the Great
  • Museo del Prado (1.5 hours)
  • Retiro Park
  • Tapas Crawl down Calle Cava Baja

These are second-priority options with extra time:

  • wander the Malasaña Barrio, Chueca Barrio and/or Salamanca Barrio
  • sunset views at the Temple of Depod

Tours to help you see as much as possible in a short amount of time:

A note for budget travelers: Madrid is one of the most expensive cities in Spain. It's still fairly cheap by US standards, but if you're looking to stretch your euros, I would not linger in Madrid. See the sights in 1 to 2 days and then move on.

How many days in Madrid for city lovers, museum enthusiasts, and shopaholics | 3 days

Art devotees should consider spending 3 days in Madrid. You'll not only have plenty of time to see the top sights but will be able to spend four to six hours at the Prado Museum and add a visit to the Reina Sofia Museum and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum.

The Naval Museum is also interesting.

Madrid is the biggest city in Spain. Its population is almost double that of Barcelona's. If you're looking for a thriving metropolitan atmosphere, Madrid is your ticket.

Other cities in Spain (Barcelona, Granada, Seville, Malaga, San Sebastian, etc.) have a smaller, old-world feel. If you're looking for a Metropolitan vibe, you'll want to consider spending 3 days in Madrid to soak in the bustling city atmosphere.

Because Madrid is Spain's biggest city and an entry hub to Europe, this is where you'll find the most shopping. All the luxury brands have storefronts in Madrid as well as popular American brands like Lululemon.

If you need a day to shop till you drop, carve a full day for that in Madrid vs. elsewhere in Spain.

How many days in Madrid for the slow traveler | 4 days

If you have an extended amount of time in Spain, have already been to Spain before and want to take a deep dive into Madrid, or just like to travel slow to explore a place from the inside out, 4 days will be a good amount of time.

You'll have plenty of time to see every sight worth visiting, wander through all the top neighborhoods multiple times, linger in museums, enjoy lengthy coffee, lunch, and dinner breaks, have time to shop, and join several tours.

This also allows plenty of time to do a day trip to Toledo (my favorite day trip from Madrid).

Those interested in Roman aqueducts should consider a day tour of Segovia and Avila.

While there are many cities in Europe where I would recommend 5, 6, or 7+ days for the slow traveler, Madrid is not one of them. I would rather linger in Seville, Mallorca, Barcelona, or add more cities to my itinerary.

4 days is the maximum I would spend in Madrid unless there are specific day trips you must do with Madrid as your home base.

In summary

I hope this post helped you decide how much time to spend in Madrid. See the highlights in 1 crazy, whirlwind day if you're itching to reach other destinations in Spain.

Spend 2 full days in Madrid to see the top sights without being rushed. You'll have enough time to join a tour or two and linger over meals/coffee breaks.

4 days will be plenty for my slow-method travelers. Do a day trip to Toledo (possibly add Segovia and Avila if you appreciate Roman aqueducts), and slow down at the Royal Palace of Madrid and Prado Museum. Better yet, join a specialized tour of both sights. Book a tapas tour and revisit your favorite barrios/neighborhoods.
